Butterfly garden, summer.

Getting Started

If you are going to plant butterfly flowers in an existing garden, you’ll simply be adding to the flowers you already have. But if you are planning a brand new garden, you’ll need to choose a spot that gets sun for much of the day. A butterfly garden that receives full sun for 5 to 6 hours a day should do well.

The size of your butterfly garden is really a matter of how much time you want to put into it. Although many butterfly flowers require little care, they still need some attention from time tp time, so remember, a garden that is 10 feet square is going to require more work than one that is 4 feet square.

If you are unsure of the type of soil you have in your yard, you may want to have it tested. A soil that is deficient in nitrogen, phosphorus, or potassium will need to be adjusted. Testing the soil will also tell you the lead content in your soil, another important factor in a successful butterfly garden, as many gardeners of the past used insecticides containing lead.

Your county agricultural service can give you the address of a lab in your area that will supply you with a soil-test kit.
